    ["description"]=>
    string(5005) "

“More time / Less guilt”.

An intimate share of an unexpected overseas move and what those closest did to show up and support when it was truly needed.

When I consider the power of positive thinking, this beautiful human comes to my mind; Viv and I met just over two years ago, when my young family and I relocated from Australia to Edinburgh for my husband’s job, which incidentally is how we’re connected. While I was packing up our life in Brisbane, Viv tracked down my number, introduced herself and set about settling us into her hometown.

Here we sit down to talk about her own unexpected experience of swapping the city she and her children grew up in for Japan, and most importantly, what got her through it.

“Moving overseas was very much not on the radar”, was one of Viv’s, a Mindset Coach, first statements.

But within only a couple of weeks, the move was very much on the radar and plans were being made to move the family abroad.  And quickly.

“It was a literal case of closing down our life in Edinburgh and setting up our life in Japan - all at once”, says Viv.  Sounds stressful.  And busy.  And according to Viv, it was.

Juggling the kids’ school, finishing work, feeding a family, cleaning a house, packing up 14 years of memories, organising all the administration that comes with an overseas move and navigating the heartache of goodbyes was intense.  And with an existing battle with clinical anxiety lurking, this move sent it into overdrive “I hardly slept in those six weeks” Viv tells me.

“And because you are the source of confidence in the decision for the rest of your family, you can’t show it.  In fact, you have to find the strength to go the other way and convince your kids that it’s going to be great”.

“You know me” continues Viv, “I believe in positive talk, but when you’re constantly trying to get everyone excited when you’re actually completely drained, it’s a lot”.

“It’s also so sad. Sad to say goodbye to the people you love the most, to the life you’ve built, your safety net”.

But what really struck me as she spoke was a sense of guilt. Guilt that she didn’t have the time she needed to properly see and say goodbye to everyone in her life.  Guilt over whether moving to Japan was the right decision for the kids.  Guilt at leaving her Father and beloved family dog.

I realised that this feeling of guilt isn’t unique to just Viv, I think it’s something that we all feel; we’re juggling everything all the time, trying to do the very best we can for those all around us.  And when someone in our family isn’t feeling great, we really take that onboard and oftentimes, blame ourselves.  That’s a lot to carry.

So, what was it that really helped?

Viv was lucky enough to have her inner circle physically around her, and there was no shortage of offers to help.  But the question was, how? What’s often hard about these times is that it can feel vulnerable, overwhelming or even embarrassing to ask for help, or to meet those offers of help with acceptance.

But as Viv so beautifully put it, “it’s times like this when the ones who are closest really shine - they tend to know exactly what you need.”

Deliveries of pre-made meals literally brought Viv to tears, “this was just so amazing - getting given meals was one less thing that I had to do, and I knew that my kids were being fed nourishing, healthy food”.  Practical help like trips to the tip, cleaning and trips to charity shops was also incredible.  Anything that took an item off the list and gave Viv more time.

Then there’s the emotional side.  Making time to see and say goodbye to everyone can be tough, especially when everything’s moving so fast.  It’s about squeezing the most you can out of the time you have.  Like planning catch ups while you’re walking the dog, or brief goodbyes at the school gate.  It’s not because you don’t want to see everyone properly, it’s because you just can’t.  “I was brought to tears again when two friendship circles got together and planned a surprise farewell, so I got to see all the girls at once”.

For Viv it was help, not stuff, that made the difference.

By her own admission, Viv’s practice of positivity has been put to the test, especially in the first couple of weeks. After the whirlwind of packing up life in Edinburgh, she was met with the next task of adjusting to life a foreign country, by all accounts it was a total culture shock.  But I’m happy to report that the move went well, the family are settled, along with Viv’s positivity, and new adventures beckon.

In our pursuit to design and build our Helpful gifting platform, we've spoken to hundreds of women to understand their experiences, and what helped them through (or what would have).  And we're not just talking about the big milestones, we're interested in the moments in between too.  You know them; the moments when life truly happens.

And whilst the stories are wildly different, so much is shared. So here's me sharing our collective dualities of reality.

Here are your words…

I can’t live without her but I miss life before her.  I want a full life, but I want my to-do list to disappear.  I want to spend my spare time with him, but I want time to myself.  I don’t want to be the glue for everyone around me, but I want to be the one who holds it all together.  I need time with my friends but I can't find any spare.  I want to make plans on a whim, but I need a schedule.  I am resentful but I am grateful.  I am strong but I am drowning.  I want to help but I don't know how to.  I find it hard but others find it easy.  I am doing it tough but not as tough as others.  I am motivated but I am tired.  I am scared, but I am the voice in their lives assuring them that they don't need to be.  I need help but I don’t know how to ask for it.  I want a career, but I don’t want to miss a moment at home.  I am lonely but surrounded.  It wasn’t my doing, but I feel guilty.  I want equality but also the celebrated understanding that we’re different.  I want her to still be here, but I don’t want her to suffer anymore.  I don’t want to age, but know that I'll be lucky if I get to.  I celebrate women who embrace their authentic selves, but I want work done.  I want another baby but I don't want to stop working.  I want wine but I don’t want to drink.  I want to show up for them, but I struggle to show up for myself.

I am uncomfortable here, but I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of modern life, one thing stays constant – the power of sisterhood to uplift, inspire, and sustain us through life's myriad of moments, both big and small.

From the depths of heart-to-heart conversations over a cup of coffee to the 8 minute rambling voice notes and exhilarating highs of dancing under the stars until the early hours, our inner circle, the ones we love the most provide a sanctuary in which we can truly be ourselves.

But what does it take to build and nurture an inner circle? And why is it so vital that we do?

Research suggests that just three to five close in-it-for-life friendships are all we need to live a happy, satisfied existence. Of course, we know many more people, some of whom we may even consider ‘good’ friends, but there are certain characteristics which distinguish good, from best:

  • Being there for each other when life gets hard.
  • Always having your back no matter what.
  • Loving you even at your worst.

By the time we reach our 40’s, we average 30 odd years of friendship with each person, with hopefully many more to come. It pays to put the time in, which we absolutely must do to get here.

A study commissioned for Fishermen’s Friends estimates you need to invest 34 hours (or 11, three hour interactions) in a person to evolve the relationship from a superficial acquaintance to a casual friendship, within a period of six months.

To form a close friendship, it takes over 200 hours.

They need to be nurtured too. Once established, close friendships need about an hour a week (or nine minutes of connection a day) to be sustained.

But we do it, or try to, because intrinsically, we know they matter.

As Robin Dunbar, BA PhD DSc (Hons), Emeritus Professor of Evolutionary Psychology at the University of Oxford, shares: “Friendships are the single most important factor influencing both our psychological and our physical health and wellbeing.”

And whether you put it down to nature (women release more oxytocin than men, encouraging us to seek connection in stressful times) or nurture (the differences in how boys and girls are socialised in early years), it’s clear that women tend to value and reap the rewards of close friendships far more so than men.

In essence, female friendships are the cornerstone of our emotional well-being, providing us with a sense of grounding and stability in an often tumultuous world, a lifeline that sustains us through life's triumphs and tribulations. But there’s a science to it too.

When we share how we’re feeling and talk openly about the hard times we’re experiencing, we’re better able to process what’s going on, and less likely to internalise it, which, according to Bella Grossman, PhD, a clinical psychologist “helps reduce the negative impact of a chronic stressor".

In fact, Research from UCLA suggests that women who lean on their female friends during stressful times may live longer than those who don't.

The exchange of vulnerability in turn strengthens our bonds, reinforcing the support and connection felt within the entire group.

It’s not just in times of need having a tight-knit inner circle benefits us though, they actively contribute to life’s ups, too. A study found that women with a strong circle of 2-3 friends in leadership positions were 2.5 times more successful in terms of their own position and salary than those who didn’t.

Unlike the rallying cry to ‘Lean in’, it seems that leaning out, or more specifically leaning on others enables women with a stronger circle of friends to seek the mentorship and guidance needed to climb the career ladder.

But it’s the day to day, the moments, messiness, and meltdowns in between the milestones that we believe the inner circle really matters.

In an age where technology often serves as a barrier to genuine human connection, female friendships offer a beacon of hope, reminding us of the profound beauty of face-to-face interaction and the simple pleasure of being truly seen and heard.

The meme sent by your bestie that has you howling at 10am on a Monday morning.

Opening the door to a delivery of pre-cooked, healthy kids meals instead of a congratulatory bouquet because they know that, as excited as you are, you’re worried about how to make this new routine work for your family.

Checking in with the ones you love in the days, weeks and months after the consolatory flowers have wilted, because you know it's not during the event, but after (or sometimes before) that they’ll need you the most.

It’s the 8 minute voice notes, the ‘I-just-need-to-rant’ texts, wise words shared just when you need to hear them, sometimes it’s when no words are spoken at all.

These. These are the moments only the people you love the most, the 3-5 in-it-for-lifers, could evoke.

It’s within our inner circles that we find the strength to face whatever challenges may come our way and the joy to savour life's most precious moments to the fullest.

Whether we are celebrating promotions, navigating the complexities of relationships, or weathering the storms of loss and heartache, our friends are there, it’s within these sacred spaces that we find solace, laughter, and the unwavering support of those who know us best.

So, here’s to the Inner Circle, ours, and yours.

Because we’re in it together, always.

Hi, I’m Kate, and I have a question for you.

How many times have you witnessed someone you love experience something tough (even when the reason is good) and found yourself saying, “I wish I knew how to help?”

For me, it’s too many. And every time it happens, I feel a little more deflated, and a little less of a “good” friend.

It began when a close friend of mine was living in a different city and experiencing total exhaustion and overwhelm.  If I’d lived closer, I ‘d have scheduled playdates with her kids so she could have an hour or two to herself.  I would have cooked, cleaned or made sure she could prioritise some self care - anything to take a few things off her to-do list and bring her back to feeling more like herself.

But I didn’t, and I couldn't find anything online that would actually HELP her through this period. Nothing that would have shown her that I saw her,  or provide the help I knew she so badly needed.

The gifting industry (the obvious go-to) caters to every milestone under the sun. But what about the moments in between, when life really happens, when flowers or the typical “stuff” just adds to the mental load? We live in a time when we can access anything, but not, it seems, the things we truly need.

So where do you go when what you need to gift is support, not stuff?

What does ‘help’ or “support” even look like?

And, perhaps more pressingly, why is it so hard to ask for it or even talk about it?

This is what I intend to uncover as I journey in pursuit of what I’m coining “The Art of Showing Up”, or to put it differently, how to ensure that our inner circles, aka the people we love the most, are NEVER doing it alone.

I’ll be exploring when the ‘village’ became bad for business. Why the gifting industry is booming yet overwhelm, loneliness and isolation is at an all-time high and boldly asking where it all went so wrong.

My findings, shaped through four key pillars; How to Show Up, When to Show Up, What to Show up with, and how to Ask For Help, powered by lived experiences (not those dictated by the industry - you won’t find a Christmas gift guide here…) will shape what I hope to be the solution to that first question; where do you go when what you need to gift is support.

The answer? I’m building it.

We Are The Helpful, is a gifting marketplace offering help, not just stuff. It’s gifting, reimagined.  It's for the inner circle, not the masses. And it’s curated by your experiences, of what actually helped you and made you feel less alone and more supported, so we can more easily gift it to others.

As for the rest? I’m well on my way. I’ve already spoken to hundreds of women, just like you, who’ve generously shared their experiences of what helped, or would have, when life happened.

If you have a story to tell (don’t we all?) then I’d love to hear from you. Drop me a note at the link below and let’s shape what the future of showing up for the ones we love looks like, together.

Love,

Love,

Kate

New parents have spoken about what they wish they had been given in the early weeks and months of parenthood, and spoiler, it wasn’t a teddy or flowers.

UK based research initiative, ‘Wish I’d Known’, is a platform dedicated to researching and finding insights to answer the most common (and sometimes not-so-common) questions parents of young children find themselves constantly asking.

It’s a home for everything your future self had wished you’d known, and where you can pay your own wisdom forward to other parents who are entering into one of the steepest learning curves of their life; parenthood.

No opinions, no judgements.  Just objective, full-picture insights.

And, they recently asked 400 new parents with children aged 0-3:  ‘What do you wish you’d been given in the early months of parenthood?’.  And the number one answer was resoundingly clear:  ‘Food prep services to save cooking’.

Now, as Helpful GIfting enthusiasts, this answer does not surprise us.  And I’m sure if you’ve ventured through the months (and sometimes years) of sleepless nights and the “I’m so busy I didn’t even brush my teeth today” days, this wouldn’t come as a surprise to you, either.

It goes to show that when (new) life happens, nourishing, easy food is not a nice-to-have but a necessity.  A new Mum needs nutrition and one-handed pickable bites that get her through the many hours of feeding.  Families need easy, throw-in-the-oven meals to keep everyone healthy and full.  The kitchen needs to be stocked with some healthy, essential foods (and let’s not forget a little indulgence…..we can keep it fun, too).

And, sometimes, the kids need some go-to meals when dinner hasn’t been properly planned.

In our pursuit to better understand The Art of Showing Up, we’ve learnt that Helpful gifting eases, never adds.  And beautiful food is the literal hero doing just that.  You’re not just gifting food; it’s so much more than that.  You’re reducing their mental load, taking a few items off the to-do list, saving them some money and keeping them fed and nourished when they need it most.  And in the case of a new Mum, you’re looking after her while she is busy looking after her newest little love.

It doesn’t have to be home-made cooking to count.  Here are some food gifting ideas:

  • Pre-made meals for the family - help stock the fridge and freezer with beautiful, tasty and comfortable meals
  • Some expertly made meals for her that provide the comfort, love and nutrients she really needs to recover from pregnancy and birth (a food hug, if you will)
  • A hamper full of one-handed bites and kitchen essentials to help in those times of feeding and snacking
  • A little hamper just for her, full of her favourite things she’s been missing for the last nine months (I’m looking at you, soft cheese, meats and fizz….)
  • Some healthy, pre-made toddler meals to help keep the new big brother or sister’s tummy happy and full.

Dear friends and family,

We are so grateful to have such a supportive group of people in our lives and we know each of you have been excited alongside us. We cannot wait for you to meet the newest member of our family. We are slowly adjusting to our new normal and gaining confidence as the days progress. The nights can be long and sometimes this new job is overwhelming and scary.

We so appreciate all your kind words and offers of support and are so thankful for all of the gifts. We have been overwhelmed with peoples generosity. Many of you have asked how you can help in these first few weeks. I know we keep saying we are fine but actually there are a few things that we really need. It can be really hard to ask for help. We haven’t really had to do it much before now. We thought it might be useful if we shared some ideas of what might help make this transition easier.

1. Patience with Visits

  • As excited as we are to introduce our little one, we’ll be adjusting to a whole new rhythm, and things may be unpredictable. Short visits, and even some quick “drive-bys” for those who want a peek without too much interaction, would be great.
  • Please give us a heads-up before visiting, even if it’s just a quick text or call.
  • Don’t be offended if we don’t reply/ask you to wait. Sometimes the thought of playing host or getting dressed is just too overwhelming.

2. Food & Snacks

  • We’d love some help with meals! If cooking is your thing, feel free to drop off something simple and easy to reheat (freezable options are amazing too).
  • If cooking isn’t your forte, gift cards for a take away or some frozen pizzas would be a big help for those nights when we’re just too exhausted to make dinner.

3. Household Help

  • Our baby is all consuming and we have been learning how to care for them and feed them so basic things like tidying up, folding laundry, and keeping up with dishes have taken a back seat. If you’re comfortable lending a hand with those small tasks, it would be such a gift.
  • We won’t say no to a few loads of laundry here and there or someone running the vacuum over the floors!
  • We wont be offended if you just do these tasks, it can be really hard to ask for help and we might even say no when you first offer. Just keep asking or skip the asking altogether and plug in the hoover!

4. Flexible Support with Our Other Kids (or Pets)

  • For those of you who are close with our other child(ren) / pet(s), we’d love some help giving them attention too. A walk to the park, a playdate, or even just stopping by to say hi can help them feel loved and entertained.

5. A Little Grace for Us

  • We’ll be learning and finding our way as new parents, so if we forget to return calls, miss a few texts, or seem frazzled, just know that we’re doing our best! Your patience and understanding will be a huge relief.

6. Holding Off on Gifts (If You’d Like)

  • We probably have enough baby clothes for now. We understand these are adorable but it can be overwhelming keeping everything organised and clean. Less is probably more.
  • New mums are always appreciative of a small care package. We often get forgotten and in truth, my baby will probably do a huge poo all over that new babygro you bought. A moisturiser, some bath salts, a face mask. Something to celebrate the absolutely incredible life event that just took place. I am finding it hard to look after myself in amongst this, a beautiful candle or thoughtful journal might remind me to do this.
  • We would love something practical if you were keen to offer a gift. A first aid class, some feeding support or some nourishing food would all be ideal.

We’ve said it, 2025 is the year of Sisterhood; prioritising it, celebrating it, expanding on it, sharing it and nurturing it.

We talk about romantic relationships a lot, and for good reason; they’re a substantial aspect of our lives from the time our hormones started dominating the script.  Romantic relationships have the power to excite, intoxicate, devastate, nurture and hold us throughout the good and the bad times, and choosing a romantic partner is known to be one of the biggest and most important decisions we will ever make.

But, what about our platonic loves?  What about the ones who we live life with, side by side, through it all?  The friends we made when nervously starting school, university or a new job?  Or the magical girl in the bathroom that shared her eye liner after a few drinks, and became the companion you couldn’t imagine living without?

The friends who write back to the 3am texts, or send the five minute rambling voice notes sharing their challenges so we feel a little less alone.  The ones who turn up with a bag of crisps and a bottle of wine when we’re nursing a heartbreak or exhaustion from parenting, and those that cheer us on before a big meeting.

These relationships make a life.  They make us feel seen, heard and understood.  It’s not just about sharing the big stuff; it’s also found in the intimacy of seeing the mundanity, the every day ups and downs.  There’s nowhere to hide here, which means that we’re loved for truly being ourselves, we’re supported unconditionally, and we’re celebrated at every chance we get.

So this year, we’re making 2025 all about the Sisterhood; because:

  • Sisterhood reminds us of the power of vulnerability: As Brené Brown has emphasis in her work, vulnerability is the birthplace of connection and belonging. Women sharing their struggles - whether it’s caring for aging parents, building careers, businesses, losing loved ones, battling illness or raising children - creates authentic bonds and helps us foster deeper relationships, which are vital for emotional well-being.
  • Sisterhood requires empathy as a connector: Empathy involves "feeling with people" and women can uniquely empathise with one another, as we face similar life challenges, creating an understanding that feels deeply supportive and comforting.
  • Sisterhood is a support system:  Support systems thrive in environments of trust, connection, and shared values. Sisterhood provides this safe space where we can be our true selves while receiving the encouragement needed to keep moving forward (because forward is the only way to go).
  • Sisterhood provides a sense of belonging and shared humanity:  A sense of belonging arises from being part of a community that accepts and supports us as we are. For many women, sisterhood offers that community - a place where shared experiences and mutual understanding create a sense of belonging that’s often hard to find elsewhere.  We were never meant to do this alone.

So, this year, what are you doing to prioritise, celebrate, expand, share and nurture the Sisterhood?  Whatever it looks like for you, we’d love to hear about it and learn how we can help make your connections stronger, and make it easier to show up when life happens; the good, bad, big and small.

After all, that’s why we exist; to ensure that the ones we love are never doing it alone.

After all, that’s why we exist; to ensure that the ones we love are never doing it alone.

Curating ‘About Hedgehog’ by Dani Seatter is quite personal for me.

It's a book that means we've lost someone we love, but it's also a book that when we receive it, it comes with a real sense of gratitude and feels like a knowing exchange from another who really understands what we're going through.

A beautiful example of ‘being met where we’re at' by another.

I know this because Dani (Author of ‘About Hedgehog’ and Founder of Eco-able) generously sent this book to me after hearing about the loss of my beautiful Mum, knowing I was finding it really hard to find the words to explain it to my young daughter who was FULL of questions.  I simply didn't have the capacity or knowledge of how to talk about it properly with her.

When we talk about helpful, heartfelt gifts for the inner circle, it's hard to go past gifts like this.

So, let's get to know Dani and Eco-able a little better - enjoy x

Hi Dani, introduce yourself!

I’m Dani and I’m an award winning children’s author and founder of award winning sustainable brand Eco-Able.

Why did you start Eco-able?

I started Eco-Able after a conversation with my sister about plastic free July, we were both frustrated by the difficulties in finding great sustainable products in one place and it occurred to me that I could do something about that. So I decided to set up Eco-Able to provide tried and tested products to help people like me live more sustainably.

Tell us more about Eco-able

Eco-Able is a sustainable brand which specialises in sourcing and creating sustainable products for families. We take time to source the right products, allowing families to feel confident that they are being mindful of the planet as well as getting what is best for their families. We specialise in creating both heirloom products, such as our reusable advent calendars and educational ones, like our sustainably made children’s books.

What was the most thoughtful and helpful gift you've received?

Over the years I’ve received some beautiful gifts from friends and loved ones, the most special of these are always the ones that someone has thoughtfully bought or made for me. There’s something so special about choosing gifts with someone specific in mind.

How would you describe your inner circle?

Thoughtful, understanding, accepting and nurturing

Dook is an award-winning artisanal company based in Edinburgh, Scotland, making salt soap in small batches using organic ingredients, essential oils and natural colours. Each batch is mixed and poured by hand resulting in distinctive, high-quality hand and body soap.

We've curated Dook because the products are truly special; they're a brand which couples a luxury beauty product with a sustainable lifestyle, offering a stunning gifting option for the Self & Sisterhood.

My personal favourite is the Lavender Mandarin, Coriander & Cedar Bath Salts - they look beautiful in the bathroom and are an absolute luxury at the end of the day.  It's a beautifully simple gift to send to a loved one needing that little reminder to take a moment for herself, or for yourself (this is what I did!).

I've asked Helen, Founder of Dook a few questions - enjoy!

Your name and role with Dook:

Helen Atherton, Founder, Dook

Why did you start Dook?

After years of making soap as a hobby, I found joy in the act of making beautiful things that smell great and work really really well.    Taking these things and creating a brand and business around them has been hugely rewarding, I love the diversity of roles that being a small business owner demands.  I'm constantly learning and evolving - it's very satisfying!

What has been the most impactful and helpful gift you've received from a loved one and why?

The gift of time!  When my children were little and my parents watched my kids.  My partner and I had a couple of pretty wonderful weekends away.

Tell us 3 - 4 words that best describe your Inner Circle (you know, the ones who look after you while you're busy looking after everyone else):

I feel like those I look after (my children and partner) look after me in their own ways too... It's pretty reciprocal most of the time!
